Writing and Singing “A Great Work” – the 2021 Youth Theme Song

I usually write the theme songs for other people to sing, like “I Will Go and Do,” sung by David Archuleta, and “Peace in Christ,” sung by McKenna Hixson. But this year, I got to sing my own song! It was a really cool experience to be able to write and sing the theme song for the youth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Every time I write a theme song, I have so many different ideas before I come up with what is right for the scripture. The scripture that the 2021 theme is based off of is D&C 64:33-34: “Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind.”

As you can see, the scripture has a lot of different parts that we could have focused on. I started focusing on “the Lord requireth the heart” and tried to write a song called “He Wants Your Heart,” but it wasn’t feeling right. We could have focused on “Be not weary in well doing,” or “laying the foundation,” or “out of small things,” but we decided that the best message for this year was “a great work.”

We decided to focus on the great work we all have, collectively, as members of the Church and children of God, and also the great work each of us have to do individually. That’s why the logo is a thumb print – it’s symbolic that each of us is unique and important, and we have a great work to do on this earth.

Here are a few ideas I had before I came up with the final version of “A Great Work.”

I love origin stories and unless you have been through this process of write and rewrite its hard to appreciate that most songs did not just fall out of the sky in finished form. love that you are willing to share these true moments of creativity.

Absolutely love this. Watching the song evolve and take shape. Thank you for sharing these. I’m truly impressed.

By the way, great job again on the new Youth Music Festival. Excellent work.

I just looked you up when I saw that you had written so many—or all??!!—of the songs on the new youth album! You are so talented, especially for someone so young. I am not surprised to see that you also wrote Peace in Christ. That song is one of my forever-favorites, and got me through some very tough days filled with anxiety. It became a life-line, bringing me much-needed peace and comfort to cling to. Thank you for sharing your talents with us, and for seeking inspiration. The Lord is clearly working through you to bless us all.

    Hi Nik,
I am a mother of 4 encompassing teenagers and primary age kids. We all love all your music. And listen to your CD in car. I don’t play the radio in the car with the kids that often because I don’t like the messages that the world puts out. It is so nice to be able to put on music that is fun and catchy that everyone loves and I don’t have to worry about language or the message that the songs are portraying. It is so awesome to hear my 13yo and 5yo both belt out your songs like “Bring you Home”. Thanks so much for your music and spirit. The whole family is a fan of yours. You are Awesome!
